“Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reasons (Mark Twain).” Filipinos are drawn to running under the party-list system because it offers a unique platform for marginalized groups and sectoral representatives to have a voice in Congress. Established in 1995 through the Party-List System Act, this system was intended to promote inclusivity by giving underrepresented sectors such as workers, farmers, indigenous peoples, and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) an opportunity to influence national legislation.

Just look at the frenzy and the circus of the mid-term elections in the homeland. It is no different from the past, I think this time it’s even worse because of the calibre of people running for public office. Lahat puede, kahit walang alam, kahit di marunong maglingkod, at sigurado hinde “Serbisyo Publiko” ang hanggarin!

Many Filipinos see the party-list as an avenue to challenge the dominance of political dynasties, which have long controlled traditional electoral politics. By running under a party-list, individuals and groups who may not have the financial resources or established networks of mainstream politicians can still campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives. This provides voters with alternatives and allows for a broader spectrum of representation in Congress.

In addition, party-list groups often focus on specific advocacy areas like workers’ rights, environmental protection, or gender equality. Filipinos passionate about these causes find the party-list system to be a suitable vehicle for bringing attention to sectoral concerns. Although some critics argue that the system has been exploited by elites, many Filipinos still believe it remains a vital path to a more inclusive and representative democracy.

It is unfortunate though, that people with vested interests, who are not even from the marginalized sector of Philippine society, abuse the partylist system for their own political gain. It is being used to perpetuate their family into politics. This is just another way of continuing the political, family dynasty, and from my end I look at it as just one way of continuing with the family business—politics!
