Little by little, the bird makes its nest (French proverb).” It’s a new life on the farm! Spring in New Zealand isn’t just about flowers; it’s also a time for new life. It’s a time of growth, rebirth, and renewal. It is a magical time of the year! Sprung is definitely a great word to express spring! Everything and everyone comes alive. The burst of colours, life, and all living things, comes out during this time of the year. Spring in New Zealand is not just a time for nature to flourish, but also a time for personal renewal. As the landscape bursts into life, people feel invigorated by the longer days and warmer temperatures. It’s a season that invites reflection, outdoor exploration, and a return to nature after the colder months of winter. It is as if, after a long, cold night, it’s time to come out and dance in the sun! It is a season of hope and renewal.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s agricultural roots run deep, and spring is the season when lambing takes place. Throughout the countryside, fields are dotted with newborn lambs frolicking under the sun. The sight of these fluffy animals running alongside their mothers is a symbol of the rejuvenation that spring represents. As one journeys through the countryside, one is given that awesome sight of tiny white spots dotting the hills and countrysides. Those are flocks of sheep, some precariously perched on hills and mountaintops, basking in the sunshine or munching on freshly grown grass.

Farmers work around the clock during this period to ensure the health and safety of the newborns, which are essential to New Zealand’s strong wool and meat industries. It’s a busy yet rewarding time for those in the farming community as they witness the beginning of a new cycle of life. My farmer friends say that this is the time when they have to be up before dawn and carry on working until sunset. There are heaps of things to do in the farm. One day is as challenging as the next one. My farmer friends have a front-seat as nature begins to unfold right before their very eyes!
